Tire Wear Problems: Causes and Symptoms

Tread wear patterns indicate over or under inflation and alignment issues. Below are the causes and symptoms of tire wear problems.

Low Pressure

Tires that are under-inflated will show more wear on both shoulders, as under-inflated tires typically lift in the center of the tread.

Excess Pressure

Over-inflated tires will have more wear in the center of the tire, as over-inflated tires are typically rounder and the outer ends of the tires do not touch the road.

Correct tire pressure will allow wear to occur evenly over the entire tire.


Uneven tire wear – wear on one edge or the other – is usually caused by a wheel alignment problem, not incorrect tire pressure.

Camber Wear

One side wear, when an inner or outer rib wears quicker than the rest of the tire, is indicative of wheel misalignment. It could be a simple wheel alignment, or it could be due to sagging springs, worn ball joints, or worn control arm bushings.

When getting your car aligned, it’s important to have the car loaded as it is normally driven, especially with independent rear suspension cars.


When the edge of each tread rib has a slightly rounded edge on one side and a sharp edge on the other, feathering is occurring. Feathering is usually caused by incorrect toe-in setting. Having it set correctly will solve this issue.

Your tires are the only part of your car that comes into contact with the road, so it makes sense you should know what they tell you about your vehicle. Because tires are attenna. What do we mean by “tires are antenna?” Simple: tires very often provide the first indication that something’s not right with your car. Remember to check your tires’ pressure at least once a month, and do a regular spot check each day. If a daily spot check is too much to remember, start a habit of checking whenever you fill gas.

6. Your Tires Have a Worn Center

It could mean: Your tires are overinflated 

If the center of your tire is worn down, it might mean the tire was overinflated such that the center-portion of the tire was taking most of the contact with the road. This is a tire pressure issue. If you have the tires set to the proper pressure and still experience center wear, it might mean the wheel and tire are not correctly matched.

5. Your Tires Have Cracks & Bulges

It could mean: Your tires need to be replaced

Over and underinflated tires are more likely to receive damage from potholes and debris than properly inflated tires, leading to the “crack and bulge” phenomena. If you see a bulge, it means you have to replace the tire, as it will inevitably fail.

4.Your Tires are ‘Scalloping’

It could mean: A problem with your suspension

No, not seafood – scalloped tires will have a series of rises and dips, the result of damaged suspension that cause the tires to bounce. Get your car to a mechanic and ask that they check the suspension.

3. Your Tires Have Diagonal-Patterned Scuff Marks

It could mean: Improper toe setting 

See diagonal-patterned cupping or scuffing on your tire? This is typically seen on the rear tires of front-wheel drive vehicles that have an improper toe setting. Improper rotation might also cause this, as could frequent heavy loads that mess with the suspension. 

2. Your Tires’ Outer Edges are Worn

It could mean: Your tires are under-inflated

The opposite of a worn center, if the inside and outside edges of your tire are worn down but not the center, it almost certainly means your tire is underinflated. Keep your eye on the PSI.

1. Your Tires Have Feathered Tread

It could mean: Improper toe setting

Feathered tread will look like ramps patterned sideways across the tire. The lower edges will be round, while the higher edges will be sharp, which you should be able to feel with your hand. This is often a consequence of improper toe setting.

Do You Need New Tires? Here’s How to Tell

At the risk of stating the obvious, there’s only one part of your car that actually touches the road with any regularity: your tires. A good set of tires properly fitted to your vehicle can make a huge difference, and worn tires aren’t just bad for gas mileage and handling: they’re a safety hazard. Here are five ways to tell your tires are, well, tired:

Check the Tread Wear Bar

If your tires are newer, they may have a feature older tires don’t: a tread wear bar built into the tire. At first this bar won’t appear, but as the tires are worn it will show up. They’ll appear as flat bars perpendicular to the tire’s tread.

The Classic: Penny Test

A penny might be just about worthless at this point, but at least it’s useful for one thing. Tread on tires ought never to be less than 1/16th of an inch. How can you know? Take a typical penny, insert it in the grooves of the tire, and if you can see all of the 16th President’s noggin, it’s time to replace your wheels.

Check the Sidewall

Tire problems don’t necessarily begin on the tread; they can occur on the sidewall too. Fortunately checking this is simple: look to see if there’s any cracking or wear.

Blisters & Other Irregularities

Another visual sign there’s a problem with your tire, or you’re about to have one: blisters, bulges, and other irregularities mean it’s time to think about replacing your round rubber friends. Remember, it’s better to replace tires early and save yourself a couple hours stranded by the side of the highway.

Not So Good Vibrations

If you’re experiencing excessive vibration while driving, one of the first things you should check is the tires. There are good vibrations and not so good vibrations. Make sure your car’s giving you the former, with the help of new tires.
